Training & Experience

I completed my core training in Humanistic / Person Centred Counselling at Roehampton University, with subsequent training in Transactional Analysis (TA), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Trauma Incident Reduction techniques.

I've been in private practice for 15 years and have experience within various clinical Counselling Agency contexts including 8 years working with clients struggling with profound physical and learning difficulty.

I am a Cascade trained Individual and Group Supervisior and part of my work includes Clinical Supervision roles with several Surrey based Counselling Services.

I also work within my own Private Supervision practice (www.counsellingsupervision.org.uk).

I keep up to date with Safeguaurding Vulnerable Groups issues by subscribing to CCPAS an independant Christian charity providing child protection advice and support throughout the UK.

I teach several Counselling, Self awareness and Continuing Professional Development courses in various settings and with Surrey Counselling Training (www.surreycounsellingtraining.org.uk) a specialised self development training provider.

Areas of Specialism

Relationship issues, Couples, Bereavement, Body image disorder, Substance misuse, Loss, Anger, Depression, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Social Phobia, Shame issues, Stress, Post traumatic stress, Work related difficulties and Childhood issues.

I work within a Person Centred ethos, and incorporate TA, Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioural and Solution Focused approaches. Where appropriate I also employ Trauma Incident Reduction techniques.

My practice includes counselling children which is only undertaken with parental agreement.
To support this work I am a member of Counselling Children & Young People (CCYP) which is recognised as an authoritative body on counselling for children and young people.
I hold a valid clear CRB Enhanced Disclosure and adhere to the Government publication "Working Together to Safeguard Children".

Understanding the client

I believe that each individual is unique and is ultimately the expert in understanding and making sense of their life.

It is important for me to acknowledge the special place the individual has in humanity and to offer a non-judgmental and warm relationship.

My core training lies within the Humanistic School and I see the relationship I develop with my clients as the central agent for change.

I look to create a relationship where the client will feel respected and accepted, where genuineness between us is evident and I strive to develop an empathic understanding of how clients perceive and experience their life.

In addition to my Person Centred core theoretical model I draw from the Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural and Solution Focused Brief Therapy approaches.

I see my work with clients as a collaborative, creative and spontaneous process in which I will draw from the ideas and interventions developed within these theoretical approaches dependant upon the needs and issues my clients bring.

Every client is different and I have found it helpful to adopt a flexible approach based on discovery with the client of what s/he finds most helpful as we work together.
